We arrived in Orlando a couple days before Christmas, ready to cram as much excitement into the week as possible. I had booked our stay at Turkey Lake, an expansive park minutes away from Universal (our main destination). The park was pretty packed with campers staying in everything from 45 foot motorhomes, to 2 person tents. But it was quiet and serene, with plenty of space to walk the dogs and even a nice wide open field for them to have some off leash time. While the park was huge (there’s an animal farm, giant lake, horseback riding, tons of picnic areas, etc.) the security is pretty tight and we always felt safe. There’s actually a pretty huge fence around the expansive property, and if coming or going after the park itself closes, residents of the campsites must use a key code to enter the large locked gate at the entrance. As we came back many occasions late at night, entering the code to get in, we joked that we lived in a ‘gated community’ 😉
It just so happened that my two older sisters were in town doing the Disney thing with their sons. It was a surprise for the boys, and a ‘girls getaway’ for them, so to speak, as the husbands remained back in PA. So, the day after we arrived in Orlando, we had the crew come over to hang out for a bit. I think my nephews got a kick out of the ‘home on wheels’. After some time checking out the motorhome, we went for a quick stroll, with each youngin’ getting their own dog to walk. The brothers hung out inside with the dogs when we got back, while the birthday boy (he celebrated is 6th birthday the day before!) hung outside with mom and aunt Fran. Everyone was a pretty hungry, so we decided to go grab some lunch. Once the boys were stuffed with an all you can eat pancake meal, we all came back to the park and headed to the gigantic playground. The boys had a ball running around after each other, and all over the jungle gym.
It was a great visit with my sisters and nephews, and I keep saying that we should plan a camping trip with them over the summer. What an adventure that would be! The next day Fran and I headed over to Universal Theme Park and had a blast. I’ll be posting about that and how we spent our Christmas later today or tomorrow. Stay tuned!
